It takes about 16 channels to have a properly sounding piano emulating two hands with chords played, 6 channels to emulate a guitar etc. I hit 32 channels before I'm even able to lay out the synths. orchestral music & chiptunes - it takes about 4 layers for a fat synth or a fat drum - double or triple that to 8 or 12 to make it possible to use stereo effects.
